5 degrees c today and raining-- Odd for January
State of the Garden.
Snow is often touted as being the Poor man's fertilizer. The fact that there is no snow cover, however convenient, is a concern for the graden and for the insulation of the tender perennials.
The planting for the 2011 year began in October 2010. Four Dozen garlic bulbs where planted. Planting is recommended before Thanksgiving ( that is canadian thanksgiving) for the following year harvest. The weather has been such that the garlic sprouted before xmas and now sits a good 3 to 4 inches out of the ground. Once you have a crop, you can use the garlic bulbs to plant for subsequent crops.. and there you have it your first "Organic" item. Of course Organic just means that the only thing on it is bug droppings and everything elese that the general environment is made up of. Nothing is every totally "clean". What ever is in the air , whatever seeps into the water table, (exhuast, pollution...etc...) all gets added to the plants chemistry...unless it is grown in a bubble...
