the aromatic humidity of the damp forest floor , floods over you
Like diving underwater, the aromatic humidity of the damp forest floor fills your senses as you enter the birch grove ravine...
As hoped, nature begins to fill in the spaces left from silver-culturing the spruce hordes..:)

and then comes...... the SHADE GARDENS
Well the help of a back hoe- the third/bottom tier was created. It will be the "growing grounds". Soil is wonderful and deep and gets lots of moisture and the scrub on the outside of the property shields it from the wind.. so its hot hot hot..:) Its like a natural greenhouse. IF that's not enough to drive a gardener wild, it also helps to connect the property with a little project of mine .. shade gardens...
SO here's the thing.... TIER 3 has been created....
I must be crazy, I must be crazy, I must be crazy. :) a new tier and another .25 acre of prime gradening, full south, loamy soil :) Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you ...TIER 3

SMOKE AND STONE
CONTINUS COGGYGRIA "Royal Purple" Smokebush.
This is the Smokebush's second year in the garden...(first spring) and I was struck by the beautiful contrast of its leaves budding out against the grey stone.

PATHS....
This began as rock and gravel... the walls have become sturdier , and the mat plants knit together to stop erosion. Wooly Thyme is the BEST.. Wild Ferns fill in the gaps around the maturing peonies, lilies, hosta and astilbe.
CRAZY..
This year it feels like the garden has its roots firmly planted in the ground.. Lots of plants maturing, filling space which helps to balance moisture retention.. too much open soil = increased water loss.
GARDENING BLISS
